Wietse de Vries.
Front-end Developer for hire.
I build things for the web, with a focus on performance, scalability and user experience. In my spare time I skate, windsurf and collect unfinished side projects.
01. About Me
After I stumbled into programming about 11 years ago, I quit business school to pursue my dream job as a developer. I earned a bachelors degree, while working as a freelance developer, and spent the first few professional years working at innovative start-ups.
I ended up at an e-commerce scale-up, where I had the opportunity to build a large scale application, while developing my own skills and grow into the developer I am today.
As a Front-end developer, I focus on creating scalable solutions through modular architecture, efficient state management, performance optimization, and high-quality code. Additionally, I work hard to provide the best possible user experience and transform any design into a pixel-perfect interface.
For me, the most important part of any job is a great team. Add a lot of ambition and strong leadership and I’ll thrive!
I’m fluent in both Dutch and English, with excellent communication skills. I’m always eager to learn and enjoy sharing knowledge with others. Here are some of the key developer skills I bring to the table:
02. Experience
Senior Front-end Developer • Audax
I led a team of developers at the Netherlands’ largest literature retailer. During my time there, I was responsible for converting a heavily branded website into a versatile white-label platform. This platform was successfully implemented for Bruna.nl, BookSpot.nl, ReadShop.nl, and a B2B system for internal retailers and franchisees.
As the lead Front-end developer, I acted as the codebase gatekeeper across multiple projects. I monitored code quality, coordinated releases, and designed new features. I regularly collaborated with stakeholders from all departments and provided support to fellow developers when needed.
Senior Front-end Developer • Videoland (RTL)
During my brief time at Videoland, we developed a feature that enabled live streaming of all RTL television channels on the platform. My primary focus was on the web client, ensuring a seamless user experience.
Lead Front-end Developer • Bruna
I was hired at Bruna to lead the teams in rebuilding their existing web shop using React.js. Over the course of more than a year, we carefully converted the existing components into React components until we could transition to a fully decoupled architecture. I coordinated this entire transition and led four development teams. Two of those teams were made up of outsourced developers, which presented the main challenge of the project.
03. Work
Most of my work ends up being part of bigger applications, but I also build websites on the side. Here are a couple of projects I’ve worked on recently:
Bruna.nl
I transitioned a monolithic app into a white-label Single Page Application for both B2B and B2C webshops. This involved setting up the front-end architecture, developing the design system, implementing and optimizing builds and performance, and creating an efficient state management system.
Packraft Trip
A performant and SEO-friendly booking site for a client who offers packrafting trips in Europe. The site integrates with the Bókun booking engine and shows dynamic data based on upcoming trips.
Personal Training Bonaire
A clean, call-to-action focused website with great performance and strong conversion rates. This SEO friendly website now ranks as the first search result for most relevant search terms.
